Le Black Pearl

Rum & cocktail bar  ·  Reims, France

Le Black Pearl is a rum and cocktail bar in Reims with a committed pirate theme and, more importantly, a real point of view — a wall of arranged rums, a proper cocktail list, tapas to go with them. It's the kind of place with genuine brand DNA. The problem was never the concept.

The problem was the old site. It ran on a dark, dated themed template that leaned so hard into the pirate motif that it read as murky rather than atmospheric — a site you squinted at instead of one you wanted to sit inside. The menu, which is the actual reason to look the place up, was hard to find and harder to read.

This rebuild deliberately keeps the brand and drops the datedness. Same gold-on-black soul, but composed like a real bar with real lighting: a full carte on the page — cocktails, the 44 arranged rums, tapas — and clear, honest actions to reserve a table or get directions.

A Page by page

Both ways, every page.

Original on the left, rebuild on the right — the same page, the same viewport. A redesign is judged past the homepage, so every page we hold both sides of is here, desktop and mobile. Where the rebuild folded several pages into one, every original is shown against it rather than one being picked to flatter the comparison.

B What changed, and why

The working notes from the rebuild, unedited — what the original site did, and what replaced it. Written while the work was happening, in the language the site is in.

WasProblem on the OLD site
NowHow the NEW build fixes it
Design & modernity
WasDefault Hello Elementor theme; stock Elementor purple/indigo and blue-green blocks leak through despite a black/gold pirate concept; flat, template feel; script font used for nearly all headings (low legibility).
NowBespoke dark gold-on-black ship's-cabin system — Cinzel engraved-serif display + clean Outfit body, wood/parchment textures, film grain, gold accents. Cohesive and premium; the theme now *serves* the brand instead of fighting it.
First impression / brand
WasHero is a stock rum-bottle mockup with faint low-contrast text; the "world-class themed bar" reputation isn't reflected — a credibility gap.
NowFull-bleed atmospheric hero with a Ken-Burns image, gold gradient wordmark, the real tagline *"Nos pirates ont du cœur, notre rhum a du goût !"*, and two clear CTAs. Instantly reads as a destination.
Menu / content
WasMenu buried across three near-duplicate "carte" pages; the downloadable menu PDF 404s; no clear single menu.
NowOne clean /carte with the real Reims menu: cocktails, 44 rhums arrangés, planteurs, tapas, bières, formules and cave highlights — classic dotted-leader pricing, all prices verbatim. Plus a dedicated /rhums-arranges flavour-family grid.
Essential info
WasNo opening hours, no phone, no e-mail, no map anywhere on the site — only "place d'Erlon". A visitor can't tell when it's open or how to reach it.
NowAddress, click-to-call phone, e-mail, a clearly-labelled hours note (day-ranges the site itself states, precise times "à confirmer"), and an embedded map with a branded fallback — in the header CTA, a contact strip on every key page, the contact page, and the footer.
Conversion
WasNo obvious primary action; privatisation is a bare contact form; no "réserver" button, no click-to-call.
NowPersistent "Réserver" CTA in the nav (tel: link), reservation-oriented contact form, privatisation clearly presented (mezzanine ≤20 / cour ≤80) with a direct call-to-book.
Mobile experience
WasHeavy WP/Elementor page, not tuned for the atmosphere on phones; slow.
NowMobile-first, fast static export; a proper mobile drawer nav; the hero, menu leaders and cards all reflow cleanly; captured at 2× for crisp retina rendering.
Trust & proof
WasNo reviews, ratings, press or awards surfaced (despite an active Instagram/Facebook).
NowNon-fabricated trust: the real Roberto / depuis 2022 founder story, the "44 rhums arrangés maison" craft proof, real socials linked, and honest info — no invented testimonials.
Performance & SEO
WasMinimal Organization JSON-LD only; no LocalBusiness/geo/hours; GTM + multiple trackers; networkidle never settles.
NowStatic export (near-instant loads), BarOrPub JSON-LD with address/geo/phone/socials, per-page metadata + Open Graph, sitemap.xml and robots.txt, semantic HTML, alt text, focus states and prefers-reduced-motion.
